After the 1st round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the only person happy about he brackets is Warren Buffett. Thanks to a few major upsets, Buffett’s bet to the public of a layout for the perfect bracket is safe.

FYI, the payout is $1 million.

The start of this year’s tournament is unlike any other, and that is not just current bias. There have been upsets across the board, as well as history made.

UMBC (who?) beat No. 1 seed Virginia Friday for the first ever 16 seed victory.

No. 13 seed Buffalo beat No. 4 seed Arizona Thursday

No. 13 Marshall beat No. 4 seed Wichita State.

No. 11 Loyola-Chicago beat No. 6 seed Miami (FL)

No. 11 Syracuse best No. 6 seed TCU

What am I getting at? The “upsets” aren’t so upset.

More and more over the years the teams and players have improved just like any other facet of life. Technology improves, cars improve, housing, etc. What this means for basketball though are better mid-major teams that people may not know much about across the country. I think the proof is in the pudding with this one.

To me, this makes for great basketball and great viewership throughout all games. Let’s be honest, the focus of the NCAA here is 💰. I’d be the first to tell you the first round 1/16 matchups do not intrigue me and have led previously to me watching other games instead.

Now, we have teams like UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) bearing top ranked Virginia by 20. WHAT THE HELL?!?! This is good for college hoops and gives the average fan proof that these mid major teams are no joke.

The committee this year has also done a great job of mixing both mid-majors and middle-of-the-pack Power 5 schools. This has shown through the amount of already early upsets with a few more on the way through the weekend here.

I’d love to hear opinions on this, as I know the controversy is pretty high on the mid-major/power 5 argument

With every bracket busted in America, it’s now time to sit back and enjoy the rest of the tournament. I know I will be!

All I have to say is, Congrats UMBC!
